A bit more whimsey

Lily was a happy little girl, even though she was the only girl in her class with pink hair.

I don't quite know what it is with me, but I always struggle to give my girls - whimsy or stylised - a 'normal' hair colour. Perhaps I harbour a secret desire for magenta locks myself? I know I'd love long thick tresses. I even dreamt last night that I was discussing hair extensions with Cheryl Cole while visiting in her modest semi-detached. Been having the strangest dreams lately...

I've been playing with whimseys today for my Sunday Sketch, Art Every Day and Tam's class (nothing like a bit of multi-tasking I say!). They really are rather fun, if a little harder to get right than they look! This little girl looks so innocent and sweet, but notice how she has her hands behind her back... What do you think she is hiding?

Might do some more later, but really should think about getting dressed and having some breakfast first!

  1. LOL. When I can I love to work in my PJs almost as if once I'm dressed & fed I'll be dragged into the real world and away from my writing or other creative project. Sundays are a great day for this.

I really like the colours on this sketch - the pink with the turquoise(is that the colour, sorry not sure what it's called) works really well. I like the way you've captured possible mischief in her posture and facial expression.

  2. Oh and I've just got to add: my 8 year old daughter was looking over my shoulder when I made the above comment and insisted on seeing more of your blog. She loved what she saw "that lady should be an artist or illustrator Mummy". I told her you already were. "Well I better get practising if I want to be as good as she is," she said. (She wants to write and illustrate her own books). She disappeared in a rush and is now at the kitchen table with an A1 piece of paper and a load of colouring pencils.

I thought you may like to know you have impressed & inspired my little girl.

  13. I love the pink hair as well. The colors here are so happy! I think she is hiding the can of pink spray paint she used, or her teddy bear that she also died pink! ha ha ha! She's really cute, and fun! xxoo

  14. Your header to your blog is really creative and I also love the background, just saying. I love your character...I'm a fan of pink hair. This character gives me a RAINBOW BRITE sort of feel...really cute.

  15. Don't worry about your natural urges to give your girls colorful hair. I for one opt to (for now) to give all my girl the "updo" hair. Think of it your signature hair style / color.

    Wonderful work. You're branch out ... ;)

  18. Cute colours! That is the first thing I noticed about her. Some months ago we were watching cartoons (Naruto) and I shrieked: "I want Sakura´s hair!!!" Mati (14) looked at me and said "No way. You are not getting your hair pink". Lol! Ok, may I get it all spiky then? "If you really, really want it" I got it. :D
