Feeling bookish
Einstein said that "Reading, after a certain age, diverts the mind too much from its creative pursuits. Any man who reads too much and uses his own brain too little falls into lazy habits of thinking."
It's an easy thing to do. I use reading as procrastination all the time. After all, delving into a book about 'The Art of Possibility' or 'Resonating through visual presentation' is work right? It's education, it's honing my craft... Well, yes, but it's not much use if all you ever do is read and never apply. Or, worse still, if you take what the author says as 'read' and don't mix in your own opinion and experience - your unique point of view.
This piece is part inspired by Modigliani (he of the long face predilection) and Audrey Hepburn (she of the pretty face). Audrey wrote that:
"Living is like tearing through a museum. Not until later do you really start absorbing what you saw, thinking about it, looking it up in a book, and remembering - because you can't take it in all at once."
This lady, who wears Audrey's quote across her chest like a cosy scarf, is wide-eyed in wonder. Her mind fills with creative fuel until she can do nothing else but light the touch paper...

Look into my eyes
What to do this evening? Hmm...
How about spending a couple of hours staring into the compelling eyes of Damon Salvatore (who I am missing terribly since the last season of Vampire Diaries finished), or...
Paint a picture of a vampire for the Butterfly Effect challenge....
Now, I wonder, could there be a way to combine the two?
And if the end result doesn't look much like him? Well, who cares? I got to gaze at the dreamy Ian Somerhalder for an hour or two which can only be a good thing! Shame I didn't quite capture that sardonic grin. Oh well, always next time...
He does look pretty creepy though, sneaking out of the darkness with all that blood-red light reflecting off his features. I don't think you need to see the fangs to know that this is no ordinary mortal. This is predator, danger, but at the same time there's something that draws you inexplicably in... Swoon....
I don't often draw men, but this whole exercise has actually taught me an important lesson. It's really rather a pleasant way to spend an evening! I'm off to practice some more. I do believe Hugh Jackman needs to be captured on canvas next...
Sharing for Paint Party Friday too.

Up above the streets and houses...
If you're British and of a certain age (that probably means over 35), I defy you not to continue the lyrics in the title and sigh fondly at memories of men in Bungle suits and loud-mouthed puppets with zips for mouths. Ahh... those days of harmless childhood entertainment. Interestingly, if you pop onto YouTube for a trip down Nostalgia Avenue, you might find a few episodes that you don't recall seeing on TV... Watch with caution it may shatter your illusions forever!
Anyway enough nonsensical rambling; I have a global readership to take of who have absolutely no interest in learning that you can buy a George fancy dress costume on eBay for £49.99...
Let's move my writing onto the more serious matter of why there is a lady with rainbow-coloured hair sitting at the top of this post.
Well, this lady up top is Ellie. She had a mix up at the hairdressers when, during a freak storm, a rainbow shot down the drainpipe, entered the salon water system and turned her hair all the colours of ... well the rainbow.
Personally I think it suits her and, as they say, worse things have happened at sea. Not sure what her Mum will say when she gets home though... especially as poor Ellie has now become rainbow obsessed and felt compelled to paint Jessica using the water squeezed from her towel.

Both of these ladies are posted for the Butterfly Effect's rainbow challenge.
I'm in a strange mood this evening. I may have over-dosed on episodes of the Vampire Diaries (and the wine probably doesn't help either). Last night I dreamt mean and nasty Klaus was after me and then I couldn't understand why I dreamt about a boy I went to school with who I haven't seen in over 30 years... until I thought about his surname... Gilbert.... cue spooky Vampire music.... I do love the ridiculous plots though - it's almost on a par with the Apprentice for encouraging pointless shouting at people inside the television screen. I really should watch something more sensible - like Britain's Got Talent.
Anyway, it never being a good idea to write a blog post when slightly inebriated and with a day's work ahead of me come sunrise, I must away to my bed. Perhaps tonight I will dream where the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow might be hidden...

The Crimson and the ... Scarlet
I just love those adjectives. Don't they just ooze lush and sensuality? What is it about red that makes us wish to lose our inhibitions? To inbibe fermented fruit; to turn up the volume and just dance like nobody is watching?
OK, I admit it. I did actually do that this evening - but nobody was watching... so who cares?
This is Donna. I'm not sure she actually looks very Donna-esque, but I painted her from a Donna Karen advert so felt obliged to give a nod in that designer's direction. I think I once owned a Donna Karen skirt (but that is pretty irrelevant to this post).
I'm having a personal soirée of music, art and dance ... with a drop of Sauvignon Blanc.
Some red art for The Butterfly Effect... which for some reason makes me think of making toast and marmite... can't think why?

Recurring dream
I'm either back at University and it's the end of term or I need to pack up to return from holiday. The trouble is... I seem to have amassed an enormous amount of... well... stuff! But it's mainly books. Hundreds of books weighing down shelves, under the bed, inside cupboards. Words and pictures. Academic, children's picture books, fiction.... there's no rhyme nor reason. Well, there probably is among that pile. I'm sure I spotted a book on the romantic poets the other day.
So, there I am in this dream and on a deadline. I need to move out, load up the car, but I have nothing to put all these books in and no space to transport them. I can't bear to part with them. I panic, I rush, I wake up...
Amy prompted us to creatively depict our dreams for The Butterfly Effect. It's been a bit of a week, so this quick digital play is all I've had time for this week, but if I didn't get to make at least one piece of art this week I was going to fade away! I'm lacking in energy and willpower, so will quickly post and link this, then I'm off to bed.. Night night....
The books are coming to get me..... Help!!!!

Wild at Heart
I want to cry. I'm just bursting with emotion and it requires release. But don't worry, these tears are not those of sadness, but more of a sense of overwhelm that comes from experiencing the joy of untold beauty. All I have been doing to kindle this outburst of passion is simply immerse myself in beautiful art on Pinterest.
There's so much inspiration out there that it fills my heart, fuels my desires and creates a longing to dive into a vat of paint then roll about over canvas. To squirt, smudge, tweak. To add detail, texture and crazy, wildly abandoned lines.
Art does something to me. How can the placement of line and colour on paper bring out such emotion? Perhaps it is because we see something of the soul of the artist. We are given a free pass into their imagination and this triggers a response in our own and forges a connection, an awakening.
Sometimes this makes me feel inadequate, a small dot in the pontilism of great art; but I try to just let it lift me on an inspiration thermal until the metaphors all become too much!
I just paused in writing this to read Kelly Rae Roberts story that she is sharing as part of the Hello Soul. Hello Business course. Reading of her realisation that Art would be her future and then seeing the fairy tale unfold just goes to prove that magic does happen to all of us if we just push ourselves out there and do a bit of personal wand-waving to make it happen.
I have known for but a short time that art resides in my soul. I often wonder how could I have left it dormant for so long? But then, maybe I just wasn't ready to embrace it. I know that it will always be a part of me and that creativity will be how I earn my living. I might not be making money as an artist but that is just the tip of the iceberg.
I have already alluded to some exciting news regarding an upcoming creative venture (you can sign up to be in on the news first at the top of my blog). Although I'm not quite ready to share all the details, I am a worker bee in the background preparing to unleash something for the creative soul in the next month or so. I am getting very excited and itching to tell you, but I want to wait until I am properly organised and decisions have been made. My branding is being created as we speak and thoughts of this project fill my every waking hour.
This week I am guest hosting on The Butterfly Effect. Weeks ago I determined on theme of Wild at Heart and I created this painting as a base from which I added more digital work. Today she feels particularly appropriate as I bare my soul to art and let the seeds in my heart take root and begin to grow.

The heart is more than life-giving pumping organ. It houses the portal to our soul from where our every emotion is wont to try and escape.
How wild is your heart?

Raindrops on roses
...and whiskers on kittens... What are my favourite things?
Well, artistically speaking, I am rather partial to drawing a face over some kind of multi-layered background so this is what you get..
I also love stories - romantic adventures with a hint of magic. What do you suppose is going on in this piece. Can you see the lady in the background looking into her mirror? Once she whispers the magic words, it won't be her reflection gazing back at her... Oh no...
The Butterfly Effect have asked us to share our favourites from a mix of questions. These were my personal favourites from their list of favourites!
What's your favourite bird to dress up in a parade?
Well, something very beautiful with lots of coloured feathers in its tail and a stunning headdress, iridescent shimmers would reflect the Brazilian sunlight (well, seriously, if I'm making all this effort, I might as well do it in an appropriate location - and Notting Hill Carnival just doesn't quite cut it). Long legs, an elegant neck and a subtle beak (nothing too flamingo - that's just so last season!).
What's my favourite pet quality that I would like to own?
Sometimes I am most envious of my cats. They just loll around the house moving from one cosy spot to another. They are fed and pampered. I think that disdain would be a great quality. The sense of ownership and being the one in charge.
What's your favourite drink to accidentally spill on a person you like?
Well, I want them to like me right back so I'd have to go for the safest option of water. But then that's not really very adventurous is it? Do you mean like or like anyway. If I really liked them, then maybe champagne - there's something about the bubbles...
What's your favourite song to sing in the shower?
Well, I don't know about the shower, but anything by Meatloaf goes down very well on the motorway of a morning!
Which favourite book character would I take on a lonely island with me?
Elizabeth Bennett. I always thought we would get along rather well and she could tell me all the bits about Mr Darcy that Jane Austen missed out!

Shh... What's that? Did you hear it?
Ah yes, it's clearer now - it's just my bed calling. Night night my bloggy friends.

Layers
My life right now is a series of layers. I'm an onion, although that sounds a bit tearful and smelly. Perhaps I'm a layer cake? Yes, I like that - much sweeter!
If you looked at my office desk now you would see some serious evidence of layering. What you get is a cross section of everything going on in my brain. I am having some seriously exciting business ideas as a result of taking Hello Soul. Hello Business with Kelly Rae Roberts and Beth Nicholls and around 300 inspiring women (interesting how we are all female!). I have paper scribbled with ideas and calculations, marketing plans, to do lists. It's mind mapping gone wild.
My diary is underneath my sketchbook and the log book from my new car. My diary has rather a long list of items that need ticking off for today. Strictly speaking writing a blog post should not be top of the agenda... but it is Saturday... and I so wanted to enter The Butterfly Challenge's Layers week. I am such a layer lover when it comes to paint. More on this in a moment.... Back to the desk...
So, there are at three paintings, a book of love poetry, a rose that is crying out to be sketched, a memory stick with items that require downloading, a pile of unopened letters (they looked boring), a cuddly snowman, post it notes, pens, a card from Amy, wireless headphones and assorted notebooks (plus a thin layer of dust).
The floor is covered in paper. There are notes stuck to the walls and piles of filing dotted around. It is complete and utter ORGANISED chaos! Honest!
Back to this painting. I rather love it I have to confess. It began life as some random red and brown scrapings and corrugated cardboard prints made using up palette paint. The brighter bands of colour were added with a brayer then a few splatterings and scatterings of this and that to add more interest.
Right, blog post done. Back to the mind mapping and business planning! I'm very excited!!! Watch this space...

Butterflies...
I've had a busy week OK, so please bear with me while I combine several art challenges together. You see, the thing is that I want to do EVERYTHING. I want to take EVERY course, join EVERY art challenge, learn EVERY technique... you get my drift...
So, this piece, by the very miracle of multi-tasking will fit nicely into Inspiration Avenue's 'Butterflies'; The Butterly Effect's 'Quotes' and is rather indicative of the mood over in the Facebook group for Hello Soul. Hello Business.
The quote is by an unknown author. Perhaps it was you or I and we just forgot we said it! I would love to be quoted, to appear on those google searches for 'quotes about creativity' or 'inspirational quotes'. I probably will be now I've typed that...
I can also squeeze this in for a Sunday Sketch and share some WIP. I almost always forget to take any progress shots. I'm usually far too immersed in the creative process.

If you go down in the woods...
My mood is dark. I am surrounded by the gloomiest forest, creepers tangle around my legs and mossy knolls catch my step. I am lost and alone. It is late and the sun is making rapid retreat. It becomes the time of the night when mortals should not tread here. It is when imagination is loose. Fantasy and fairy tale whisper through the dried and creaking boughs. Story is here...
There are so few places in this over-populated country that remain 'untouched'. Where nothing has been dug or built upon, explored and exploited. Unsurprisingly, many believe our ancient woodland is the portal to magic where pixies and elves flit among the bluebells passing by the cast of fairy tales.
I took my imagination to the woods and let her roam past dusk when the secrets are revealed. She met a lady in a red hood whose vein and sinews are formed from the flora and fauna. She carries the wisdom of wolves and the strength of woman... Are you receptive?
***
I painted 'Red' last night - on the cusp of returning to the world of work this morning, she beckoned me into a land of fantasy. It all began quite innocently when I chose to dip my imagination into the woodland for this week's Butterfly Effect challenge. I pondered painting fairies wearing acorn caps or innocent maidens skipping happily towards honeysuckle-strewn cottages and hungry Grandmothers...
But the Muse took me on a darker journey. She fed me spirits and played haunting melodies to intoxicate my senses and lose all sense of direction. She bade me play and experiment, building layer upon layer. Together we created Red.
In the light of day she looks most sinister. What do you think?

Group therapy
Rebecca
I am so buzzed! I've just spent two hours in the company of other artists while we created together. I enjoyed a glass of wine while I painted Rebecca here. Not everyone thought it was appropriate to be consuming alcohol - it being 9am in the morning and that... But I was OK because it was 8pm for me :)That's the beauty of the online live art demonstration - we're all in the comfort of our own time zones and homes... Big thanks to Amy. She showed us how to paint a cat on fabric and then seal with wax. It's amazing how cat-like this piece is eh? Well, I confess I did do the cat as well, only I don't do fabric and sewing, so attempted to use a flocked piece of scrapbook paper and it didn't quite go to plan. So, as I'm addicted to faces right now (see most of this week's posts), I just couldn't resist another one - especially as everyone has been so encouraging - thank you!
You may spot a subtle difference with this piece, it being on sheet music rather than yellowing prose. It's all part of a cunning plan to multi-task. See, this fulfills the criteria for The Butterly Effect music prompt and of course Paint Party Friday AND Art Every Day Month. Phew...
She has a very wonky-shaped face, but I'm cool with that. I'm literally slinging these portraits down - I'm more interested in the shading and taking a really loose approach... Maybe tomorrow I'll try and fix her up a bit.... Maybe not.... I wonder what I'll create next?
