The Neverending Painting

Is it finished? Is it? You tell me!

The final canvas from Flora Bowley's workshop at the Do What You Love Retreat. It bears little resemblance to what I brought home. Those on the workshop might remember the memaid who then got painted over! The face reappeared in a different spot on the canvas, but clearly she was determined to be seen! What do you think? Is it too 'busy' now? Does the composition work?

Last time I joined the Paint Party Friday crew she was moving in this direction. Did I got too far?

  3. You're in a dark mood these days. :) I like it! It works for me. Does it work for you? You have to be happy with it first. :)

  6. Wow, i think it looks amazing - all the patterns in an almost abstract style and then this stunning eye peeking out of the canvas! Its amazing how different it looks now its a bit darker but both work equally well in my opinion. I love it!

The colors pop..the blues and reds totally pull me in...then weave me out with energy and ...pulls me deep in thought as well..i totally relate to her peeking out from a mysterious space and all the rich layers and textures are like a hidden language pouring forth...LOVE THIS!

  9. Isn't it hard to say "Finished!". I often set a painting aside so it is in my pathway so I can see it occasionally during the day. It is usually then I know the answer. She is mesmerizing!

  10. It's much darker than the first one...I like the mystery of her here, though! She's full of intrigue - and i like how she is haalf way hidden!

  11. I just love this! It is so mysterious and though provoking. I totally get not knowing when a painting is done. I have been painting since I was able to hold a pencil and I never thought anything was done!!! I just have say to myself at some point, enough and give it a title. Titles are another story altogether...what to name a piece! :-)

  12. There is a lot of depth and yes like everyone says, she is very mysterious. I love the blues and reds, very inviting. She's peeking out daring as if daring us to go in. "I dare you to try to come in" kind of look. Wonderful piece. Happy PPF!

  13. I think it looks like it has much more depth in the second picture. The extra red gives it more contrast. great job! You could add more if you wanted, but I think it looks awesome now. Happy PPF! Marcia

  14. Lovely rich colors of reds and blues. I think you can see her easier because of more reds yet there is so much mystery in this. Lovely. Theresa

  15. oh my goodness... I think it turned out perfect. (and that workshop looked incredible!) I prefer the finished piece to the one before. I think it is more mysterious. I love the composition. She really did want to take a peak I think!

  17. I think it is finished. My eye travels around the canvas and each corner brings me back to the woman peeking out. It is a deep rich painting - my eye travels exactly right - and never strays from the canvas. It makes me want to dive in and be where the woman is in all that rich beauty and color. Being an artist I know truly a painting is never done but you must find your stopping place and pack up the brushes and say "Done!"

  22. It looks finifshed to me. The girl definitely is mysterious, but she also appears calmer now. That might be the result of the darker color. I do like it.

  32. The girl only half there is mega cool. You got the right amount of dark & light with enough "white" space for it to breath. The flow works perfectly too.

  33. You can never go to far with this type of art. It is neverending like you said. You could go back to it in a year and still be adding on to it or getting rid of something!! I love this piece!

  34. The dense patterns highlight the figure behind it. The moody color is a bit of surprise to me as your usual palette are more to the brighter side. Still nice artwork. You're doing just fine!

  35. Ah - the question that every artist asks when to stop. The painting is dreamy, almost like being in a misty trance state, the figure is elusive and draws you into the art works mystery. Wonderful!

  36. LOL - what a tough question! I have liked every version so far!

The depth here makes it seem more powerful now.
