Autumnal accessories
Every Autumn or Fall as some of you prefer to call it (presumably because you slip over on the icy pavements a lot...), there's an ever present accessory we are often seen sporting. Yes, you probably guessed from the photo above - it's a spider web - with or without accompanying arachnid.
Spiders just love to dress us up during these chillier months. They thoughtfully spin their webs directly where we will walk through them - preferably at face height right outside our front doors or across footpaths. This way it's easy for them to wrap our features in a fine gauze with their egg legged selves perching thoughtfully somewhere in our hair.
There's a ritual I've also observed as we get dressed up in this delicate gossamer. It requires much arm flapping, face swiping and head itching - plus often a whole body shiver. Rarely does putting on clothing and dance go so entirely hand in hand!

Fashioning something
This piece represents season after season of changing fashion that eventually blends into one. It's a real mixed media creation we've got here darlings. I snipped out a 'dress pattern' from the latest copy of Elle - using all the latest trends - from oriental, to romance and long, floaty skirts. Don't they make the most perfect skirt? She sits in my sketchbook looking rather lonely with no catwalk or magazine page to grace, so I had to keep on creating. I stuck her in a limo and we drove over to Photoshop.
Lots of words from the gabbling fashion journalists were grabbed and scanned to make a layer in Photoshop, a random page from Elle joined the mix, then the whole thing was given a fabric then a grungy photographic texture.
You need to enlarge her to get the full effect.
Credits - various pages from Elle fashion supplement, Kim Klassen texture. It was great fun - snipping out all those ladies was most therapeutic.

Fashioning art
Up to this summer, I hadn't bought a fashion magazine for years; I'd rather spend the money on a good book or some juicy art supplies. However, this year I bucked the trend and went 'glossy'. My most thumbed and now a touch dog-earred is June's Vogue. Being a little off-trend I bought from a discount market stall in July - for a mere 80 pence - a top tip for the cash-challenged. I've devoured its pages since in a fashion probably never seen before. No, readers I have not been eating it, but I have tried out a few recipes.
Vogue inspires many a fair maiden - most often to part with their cash on clothing, make up and accessories and to drool over Jimmy Choo's. For me however, it's the paintbrush, pastels and acrylics, it's the new photoshop skills I'm learning on my visual poetry course; it's the colouring in of Nicole Kidman, the magical mermaids swimming off the swimsuit pages and the experiments with shade. I have collaged, gessoed, snipped, stuck and now had a bit of fun with my scanner and photoshop.
Thank you Vogue - June 2009 - you have helped release my creativity. In your honour I create this digital collage from you and for you ... and also Mixed Media Monday's 'Fashion' challenge.
