Mischief at the Prom

Do fairies have Proms?

I didn't have a Prom. This lovely US tradition only arrived on our doorsteps in recent years. I would have liked a Prom. Although I went to an all-girls school which might have made it a bit dull... so it was probably for the best...

Can I let you into a secret? I'm supposed to be writing my 'morning pages' - three sheets of free-flow thought (hand-written). It's what Julia Cameron preaches in her Artist's Way Book. I'm not very good at remembering to do them... You're supposed to do them as soon as you wake, but I'm usually deep in the fug of semi-consciousness followed by crazy rush to get necessary beings and things out of the door to where they are supposed to be.

I write this because I'm rambling. Fairies and Proms? What kind of a post is this? Well, it is both an attempt to enter Inspiration Avenue's Fairy challenge and Sunday Sketches as well as a guilt trip about not writing my morning pages again... so I'm sort of doing a little bit of them here (though you are not supposed to type or show anyone - whoops!).

Melissa (the fairy Prom Queen), was created in watercolour. She didn't scan too well, so I popped her in a digital frame. I'm sorry to report that by the time the party was over, she didn't look quite so pristine. There was blackberry wine all down her dress (which was even torn in places), the spider-silk ribbons in her hair got stuck in Puck's (who knows what they were doing for that to happen...) and she left her flowers 'who knows where'. She still has that pink flush in her cheeks though!

Hopefully, by September she will have recovered (and be allowed out again). For there is a very special fairy tea party that all will attend and we are all invited!

  1. Lovely fairy prom! We had graduates ball after doing our A-Levels, we all had to wear dresses with elbow length sleeves, and *nothing* peeking out of the top....and no bodily contact! Fun!! If I had to write 2 pages on waking up, it would be 'Where am I I need to pee I wanna coffee,I wanna go back to sleep.......etc' Have fun!

  3. She is so lovely! :) Really, you don't have prom in England? We have a more formal thing that we have to learn a specific dance routine to dance in front of our parents at the prom. Then we go party. :) It has gone so far in previous years that we have organized dances on the streets at the same time in the cities across the country and we even made it to the Guinness book of records. :)) Here is a link because you got me so excited about this. :))) http://sasodomijan.wordpress.com/2010/05/21/maturantska-parada-2010-ljubljana/
Good luck to you with writing.

  17. We don't have prom... At my daughter's all girl school we have formals in senior and semi formals in year 11... the only difference seems to be the length of the dress from what I can tell... dear Phantom has decided it isn't for her and a group of her friends are all boycotting having to find dates that get approved as they face the age old girl's school issue of not knowing that many boys... they are going out to dinner and having a movie night which seems like a good idea... lots more fun, and they will still get all the goss about which girls ended up in states like your fairy ... xx

  21. Well, if anyone belongs at a prom, it's a beautiful fairy. And I think we all know what she was doing with Puck. I do hope she'll emerge again for the Fairies Tea Party.

  25. Oh, Melissa DID have a lovely time at the prom, didn't she! She definitely must be recovered in time for the Fairy Tea. Should we promise it will be a little more sedate than the prom? Hmmm, we're not sure what to expect, so I don't know if we can. Please tell her mother we will keep an eye on her though!

  26. Too cute! Love the story behind her prom and the name of her date, Puck. Sounds like they were a bit naughty, as most prom nights are.

  29. Melissa has company...I did not go to my prom either. :( BUT, I enjoyed seeing my children attend not one but about four proms each (their own and friends).
LOVE your illustrations and your page is dreamy. Found my way via The Fairies' Tea. I'm thinking of joining the fun.
Following and look forward to visiting.
    Much love,
    Marcia

  30. What a lovely fairy - distressed and all! Even though I went to High School in the US, we didn't have a prom. I went to the High School of Performing Arts, otherwise known as the "Fame" school, and every day at lunch was a big dance party. So prom seemed pretty redundant! Love your blog and your illustrations. Happy IA Tea Party Day!
