Blooming

I painted this in Flora Bowley's class at the Do What You Love Retreat. I love it! However, you have no idea how many paintings are underneath! There's angst among the long gone butterfly wings and rainbowed hillside, but it's topped with unadulterated pleasure in smearing on paint with fingers; in being brave enough to cover up what had gone before and just paint; and - for doing what you love!

Having lived with it for a week or so, I still think it needs a little tweak here and there - a touch more yellow perhaps and I don't really like those bottom-left-dots.

I also have my third canvas from the retreat to share - the one where I spent hours painting a face only to paint over her in a daring leap of adventure.

I have some earlier versions of this painting to share with you too, but the images are not on this computer, so they might for another Paint Party Friday another day!

Don't you just love all these layers? It makes me want to lick it!!

  11. Love the colours in this - the blue and the orange work really well together. I have an earlier version of this painting in its life as a butterfly on one of my blog postings.

    Looking forward to canvas 3!

  12. I keep hearing about this Flora lady who makes artist be brave and paint over or pass their work on to someone else to paint over - makes me come out in a cold sweat just thinking about it but that no doubt means I could do with going on her course and learning to be more free and daring with my own work!! I love the layers - it is my favourite thing from when I worked in oils - how many layers and how much texture can be achieved. This is a great piece and btw - I love the yellow dots in the corner!

  15. Yes Lisa! It does look luscious and good enough to lick. I'll bet if you check anyone's artwork, you will find many layers that have been overpainted. We just work til we get it right don't we? It sounds like your retreat was a wonderful experience.

  34. blogger comments finally working for me!! you're right, the colors are delicious and the rich colors in the top painting are fab! Personally I don't think it needs more yellow - I like just the one bright touch, but I do agree with you about the lower dots....almost too much of a good thing. Whatever you decide, I'm sure the finished painting will be great!

  35. I LOVE how brave you always are with your art- you inspire me on a regular basis- so I must first thank you for just being the wonderful YOU that you are every day- I love you!
And, secondly, I can't see how you could improve on these- they already have such great passion and energy....I suggest waiting a week or so and then look again- it could be, you are still too close to it?
But, you are the artist here, and you must do what's right for you ;) and I know I will love it no matter what choice you make!
    PPF Hugs,
    Stephanie

  36. The texture is wonderful!! I love those layers, and I love your colors. Isn't it great that we can always paint over it? Although it would be sad to do that with this painting. It looks almost finished.

  41. It takes courage to repaint a canvas you spent so many hours on. I see a peacock in your top piece - and I'm partial to peacocks, so I LOVE it. I wouldn't tweak ti, but that's just me! Happy PFF!

  42. This is so pretty, I really love it. I see a peacock or some type of bird too, and I am very impressed that you kept painting until you liked what you saw.
