The eyes are the window to the soul

You may recognise this eye - it's my profile picture. I don't know why it has never occurred to me to draw it before. The sketch is sitting in front of me now. It seems strange to be staring into your own eye; a part of you that says so much about you, yet you rarely see yourself. When that photo was taken my soul was a little lost. Did I capture that? Can you see into my soul? What else can you see?

This piece, although intended for The Three Muses 'quote or quip' challenge, is also a bit of homework for my Suzi Blu Goddess & Poet portrait class. What a wonderful teacher she is, I could watch and listen all night. Personally I think that all artists should wear feathered hats at least once a day and dance around with parasols. There's something else I adore about Suzi - it's her recording studio aka bedroom. The room is a tip! I can just hear my Mum tutting "you think she'd have tidied up, fancy filming with all that mess..." Don't listen Suzi! I love you just the way you are!!!

I had planned to working some more on this and incorporating the quotation, giving it some colour... but time ran away (through an open window!)

  2. GREAT QUOTE--you got those eyes down, I tell you. I was watching the one Suzi video, and I can't remember which one, but she asks us if we can hear GiGi snoring--she's so funny :)

  3. I see a great writer in that eye first of all...then I see a deep thinker...You said you were feeling a little lost when it was taken, but I see a happy face with it...strange.
Love your post and I love that quote too...AND I adore Suzi. I signed up for her Petit Doll class...do you know I have yet to draw an eyelash???? I don't know, I love her videos and teaching and yet, I can't get myself to pick up a pencil to DRAW!!! I think I have too many other things going on and I just can't focus...I love messy people because I'm one too...LOL Will be back....xo

  4. Stunning eye and what a great idea! I too love Suzi's videos, she is a great teacher (and entertainer, both). Have you come across Monica's Heart and Hands site? She offers a portrait drawing class too and is brilliant, though very different from Suzi. I continue to learn so much from both of them

  7. I've always been fascinated by eyes. I fell in lust once with a knight in shining armor who turned out to be a frog --- but he had beautiful brown eyes so deep I got lost in them ... but that's another story! I like your idea of sketching your own eye, and I like what you've said about it. Thanks for sharing.

  8. Your eye is beautifully drawn. I think you can tell something about a person by looking at their eyes. Also ditto for pets.

  9. I think the sketch is beautiful. You asked what I see in the eye and I would stare, leave it, go back to it, etc. I think the most dominant is the look of arriving at your surprise party, but you already know. So a fraction of a full blown surprised looked. Questioning but knowing..make sense. Beautifully done, none the less.

  10. Great sketch. Love the tiny specks around the iris. It perks up the eye and makes it look real. I don't think you're lost. It's more like your on a search. Well done. Keep going!

  13. This is a wonderfully expressive eye, no matter *what's* in her soul, it's obviously full of something good:)
P.S. I've been meaning to thank you for a couple of weeks- thanks for the heads up re: Neil Gaiman; he is wonderful- just finished Neverwhere, now my (almost) 16 yr old is reading it. One blessing of teenaged children is you can share reading with them....life is good!!! We're dying for more, any suggestions on next reads or are they all as wonderful?

  19. Yes, I arrived at your blog page through your profile and "the eye" is always the first thing your fans see. I did make the connection between it and your most beautiful drawing which is perfect for the quote you chose. Eyes are the most difficult parts to draw but you have nailed yours. Take a bow!
