The art of football

Bridget

Louise

These are part of my series of football paintings - the kind you do while the match is playing at the other end of the room. I do try to be patriotic and support my national team, but football does get a bit tedious after the first five minutes and it annoys me think how much they get paid to pass the ball around (not always very successfully) and hit the post.

For those of you not on European shores, you may have missed the fact that it's the 'Euros'. Across our continent, fans gather by their TV sets biting their nails and chewing their knuckles. After 90 minutes of watching the players running about you'll be lucky to see one goal scored. You are guaranteed though at least one bad referee decision (yeah, yeah, it crossed the line after all - live with it - we remember Lampard in South Africa and the famous 'hand of God). You are guaranteed a spot of high drama histrionics from the players - lots of rolling around the floor in agony clutching their left leg when the replay shows they were actually kicked in the right... then they're leaping up and running after the ball when they realise nobody gives a toss.

There's not even much eye candy on the pitch either to help pass the time. Bring back Beckham I say. A friend of mine saw him play many times. She said he actually 'twinkles'...

Oh well, if he's not playing football this week, maybe he'd like to be my guest at Paint Party Friday. He certainly appears to be dressed for it!

I love how you have worked directly onto the page.... did you use pencils or prep the page and use watercolours.

I love the text showing through on her face in the second one especially.

    Oops, lots of loves....

  4. Beautiful portraits - I especially like the lady in the scarf with the tendrils of hair blowing around - you can just imagine her being a settler in the wild west - all little house on the prairie!
I have also taken myself off to paint while the football has been on the tv in our house. I just couldn't care less about it and, like you, I get so cross when I think about how much these male divas get paid for playing a game! Anyhoo, your art is beautiful!!

  21. I love your girls, how beautiful they are. I especially like Bridget.
Usually I'm not a big football fan (or, as they say here, soccer - football is something so completely different here and I always wonder why it's called football...), but during the Euros and the World Cup I turn into one! And I envy all of you that you can watch the games! I follow it on the Internet, but it's just not the same.
    So, I better paint, right?

  25. Beautiful paintings! How did you do them? I am a novice with watercolor, but have the supplies, and even old books that I picked up at Goodwill, a resale store here in the USA. Do you have to seal the pages somehow and then paint on them? or do you just paint the background, let it dry then paint the ladies? Or draw the whole thing and then paint the background wet into wet, let dry paint the ladies???! My fav is the first one with the red scarf. The sports outrage is so funny, too, and the adorable DB photo.
