A sneaky spot of multi-tasking

So much art to do, so little time... Sometimes you just have to grab the opportunity to mix a few challenges into one. I present a sneaky bit of fairy tale story telling sketched out. This equates nicely to:

An entry for Illustration Friday - sneaky. Just look at the cheeky faced Prince as he calls out to Rapunzel "let down your long hair". She's expecting an old hag to climb up her golden tresses but instead will find her knight in shining armour (let's hope he sheds some of that additional metallic weight before he climbs up or the poor girl will have a headache for weeks.)

Fairy tale was coincidentally the prompt from the Drawing Lab I found begging for attention on Gumnut's blog. I'm a bit late with this one, but hey better than never.

Then we have the location of this piece - in my 'storybook sketchbook' for the Sketchbook Project - that's another page ticked off.

Art Every Day Month is satisfied.

And finally, it's a sketch - albeit a fairly detailed one, so we'll see it on Sunday Sketches.

Phew, not bad for an hour's work! All that experience of being a woman helps I think :)

I fancied a bit of whimsey and was pleased with my young Knight. I did struggle with his wink though. Any hints on how to draw a whimsey wink would be most appreciated. The tower is rather out of proportion/perspective on purpose - bit of artistic licence going on there...

  1. That is great :D I particularly like the sketching style and colour.

Regarding the wink - when a person winks cheekily, he lifts the muscles in his cheek and lowers the muscles in his brow to close one eye, something our eye muscles can't do without help from other muscles. So you need to squint the winking eye.

One thing I do when drawing human characteristics is stare at my own for info. So maybe stand in front of a mirror and wink at yourself to see the shapes formed.

And thanks for joining in with the Drawing Lab challenge. Great to see your stuff :D

  3. One of my fav fairy tales, illustrated beautifully. Winks are hard expressions to catch, possible the line for the upper lid would look good a little lighter?

  4. i love the style of the sketch. and the colors, too. Your knight is very whimsical, indeed. just make the wink a line with slight arch. (only one line) and do the same little wrinkles on the side. I do agree, i have to look in the mirror or have my kids pose for facial expressions! he he he. -

i love the whole illustration though, and you rocked her HAIR!!!! and the castle. xxx

  15. I believe in Fairies and I adore fairy tales.
Especially the Grimm-er ones. I remember one about a girl with a yellow ribbon around her neck that she always wore, until after she married and her curious husband untied it and her head fell off...Do you remember that one?
I have been searching for it ever since my kids were small and never found it...Did I dream it up???

PS: Your drawing is perfect! I hear a children's book calling "wright me, write me"
